Squaremoticon
this project has no status, created on 02/03/2006
I use MSN for IM. Since they introduced user-made emoticons, my messaging windows look busier then ever, with all those : ), "hello", "haha", "you", and even "." blinking & waving at me. Seems like no user I met use icons with one consistent style. We used to copy from different places. I think it would be nice to create my own identity on msn.

The Parts
First I thought of taking photos of my own face, but I didn't want to scare off my online buddies. One day when I was doodling with my daughter while watching elmo on tv, I fitted the elmo face into a square (that piece of paper got to be somewhere in my house, will post it here later). The other day, I realized that just a few single strokes on a square can make all kind of faces & emotions. How late am I... maybe it's no news to a kindergartener. But I went on with my photoshop, made different layers of eyes & mouths. (nice: the box doodle project) |

Mixed Feelings
Looking at the "poster" at the top of this page, I can see that the mouth carries a strong emotion than the eyes do. The "U" shape mouth always looks happy, no matter which pair of eyes it watches with.
To me, the eyes are more connected to one's character. The up-side-down "U"s look extrovert, and the "U"s look introvert. These shapes don't mean "happy" or "sad", as what I used to expect. Compare the second face on the first row and of the second row. Both are sad, but the second one has a deeper, soul search sense.
It's funny to look at each of them and try to identify feelings of my inner self... Therapeutic, can I say? |

Naming the Babies
Every face needs a label, so that I can use them in my MSN messenger. E.g., the "U" eyes & "X" mouth is named "ux". Click the each icon on the left to see the name. |

What's Next?
In MSN Messenger, under Tools > My Emoticons, click "Create..." to insert each of the new icons. In the "shortcut" field, use the icon name enclosed by a pair of square bracket, e.g, [ux] So when I want a smart smile, type [vu], which shows For the next project, I want to explore more eyes & mouths... there should be tons out there. Let me search. Thanks for reading!! |
